The chapel designed by Italian architect Francesco Cellini harmoniously blends into the surrounding nature, almost imperceptibly lifting from the forest floor of San Giorgio Island.
The architectural solution reflects on the concept of the chapel as a symbol. The small structure deliberately opens up to the surrounding landscape, completing its space. From a distance and head-on, the cross shape becomes appreciable. The chapel accommodates an altar and a lectern with an open book, invoking a liturgical space.
The structure is entirely clad in ultra-thin ceramic slabs. External panels are dark and characterized by an iron-like texture. Internally, the surfaces are smooth and glossy white to enhance the internal-external contrast and amplify the effects of reflections and play of light.
