In 2018, the Holy See participated for the first time in the Venice Architecture Biennale. The initiative, promoted by Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, was curated by Francesco Dal Co and Micol Forti. Initially conceived as temporary, the project involved creating ten chapels on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore, designed by ten architects from various backgrounds. Drawing inspiration from Skogskapellet, the woodland chapel designed by Erik Gunnar Asplund in 1918 in Stockholm's cemetery, the architects building the Vatican Chapels were free from functional constraints or typological norms. The chapels and the introductory pavilion dedicated to Asplund's work were crafted in collaboration with various builders, showcasing a diversity of materials.
